APIs & Integration
API-Centric Integration Patterns
Build governed APIs that connect enterprise applications and agent-enabled workflows.
2026 update. To expose these APIs to agents see MCP gateway architecture and, on SAP, SAP Integration Suite MCP Gateway.
API-centric integration treats API contracts as a managed interface to business capabilities. Keep externally exposed endpoints stable while internal transformations, orchestration and adapters evolve.
Core elements
- Contract-first design and predictable versioning.
- OAuth 2.0 or other context-appropriate authentication and scope-based authorization.
- Request validation, quotas, throttling and observability.
- Idempotency for business operations and deliberate retry behavior.
- Event-based processing when synchronous APIs cannot meet latency or reliability requirements.
Example sequence
Consumer → API Gateway → Integration Service → ERP / CRM
↘ Monitoring & Error HandlingFor MCP-enabled APIs, apply an explicit tool contract and separate discovery from authorization.
